Position Summary, Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Assistant Manager, this role focuses on fostering strong relationships with Apex members and creating engaging Specialty Fitness classes. The position promotes fitness and wellness through safe instruction of aquatic fitness classes and assists with substituting classes when necessary. Additional responsibilities include announcing and informing participants about relevant Apex activities, attending all staff meetings and training courses, and adhering to Apex policies and procedures. Instructors must obtain continuing education credits, maintain current certifications, and provide documentation of all certifications to the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator promptly. They must also respond appropriately to all emergency situations.
Specialized Fitness Classes:
Bones - Wednesdays 1030am-1130am
We're looking for a knowledgeable and motivating coach to lead “Bones”, a popular specialized fitness class designed for older adults with osteoporosis. This class focuses on strength, posture, balance, and functional movement. The group is filled with energetic participants who show up ready to work hard, and don’t want to be treated as fragile. Ideal candidates will understand how to program safely for osteoporosis while still delivering a challenging, upbeat, and empowering experience as well as providing modifications for those in need.
Senior Fit - Wednesdays 8am-9am
We're looking for an experienced and motivating coach to lead “Senior Fit”, a popular specialized class for older adults who love to move, lift, and be challenged. This class focuses on strength, posture, balance, and functional movement. The group is filled with energetic participants who show up ready to work hard, and don’t want to be treated as fragile. Ideal candidates will understand how to program safely for active adults while still delivering a challenging, and empowering experience as well as providing modifications for those in need.
Requirements
Job Qualifications
Certifications: Fitness Certification: The ideal candidate would have a Senior Fitness and/or Corrective Exercise certification. A valid certification such as ACE (American Council on Exercise), NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), or a similar qualification for personal training.
Education and Experience
Safety and Modifications:
Experience in modifying exercises for clients with different abilities, ages, and fitness levels. An instructor who can provide options for both beginners and more advanced participants, ensuring the classes are accessible and effective for everyone.
Knowledge of injury prevention and how to teach proper form to reduce the risk of strain, particularly for Active Adults.
Enthusiasm & Communication: A passion for fitness and a strong ability to motivate participants. Fitness instructors need to be able to create a welcoming, positive, and energetic environment, whether in the studio or poolside.
Strong verbal communication skills to ensure clear instruction, especially when demonstrating complex movements or providing corrections.
Flexibility and Class Variety:
The ability to teach a variety of fitness classes, both in-person and potentially virtually, depends on your facility’s needs. This flexibility allows them to step into different formats or cover shifts as needed.
Additional Considerations:
Experience with specific populations (e.g., seniors, prenatal/postnatal, rehabilitation) could be a plus, especially for aquatic fitness where water-based exercises are often beneficial for joint health and mobility.
Familiarity with tracking fitness progress or using technology (like fitness apps or wearables) could also be valuable, especially in the context of general fitness classes.
Physical Activities
Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
Ability to maintain balance and coordination while assisting with physical activities or working on uneven terrain.
Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, or sit on the floor as needed during activities or tasks.
Work Environment
Work may occur in environments with poor acoustics, distractions, or high activity levels.
